The Skin of the Earth 1

“The Skin of the Earth” is a publication that edits images captured since 2021. Within its pages, it presents a series of landscapes that the artist has traversed, and a special attention is given to rocky elements and the Earth’s surface. On one hand, it portrays a landscape that could easily be described as solid, opaque and corpulent, where those rocky elements appear as dense and substantial. On the other hand, it is through the translucent surface of the paper chosen by the artist for this book that a short circuit of materials is established. While the referent pertains to something massive – mountains, soils, cliffs – the texture and transparency of the medium evoke a unique subtlety. Through this contrast, other senses are evoked in dealing with a landscape: it ceases to be solely interpreted as static and lifeless. According to the artist, “translucency brings a lightness to the image of matter, allowing us to see the hills and rocks beyond their naturalistic meanings”. It is also thanks to the diaphanous quality of the pages that the readers can observe an overlapping of the records – each time they advance in their reading, new contours and boundaries are created across the pages.
Furthermore, the publication combines this photographic book with excerpts from the books Missing Words for Considering Stones, Rocks, Pebbles and Mountains: A Vocabulary of Proximity (2021), edited by the Brazilian artist and researcher Mabe Bethônico (1966), as well as Ser Crânio (2019), by the French philosopher Georges Didi-Huberman (1953). Both titles are important interlocutors in the development of this visual essay.
“The Skin of the Earth” is the result of a series of experiments developed over the course of twelve months, within the context of a contemporary photography study ground coordinated by the artist André Penteado (1970).

A Pele da Terra é um projeto de publicação que edita imagens capturadas desde 2021. Traz, em seu interior, uma série de registros de paisagens pelas quais a artista atravessou, dando especial atenção aos elementos rochosos e a superfície terrestre. Se por um lado retrata uma paisagem que poderia facilmente ser descrita como sólida, opaca e corpulenta, onde os seus elementos pétreos se apresentam como densos e substanciosos, por outro, é na superfície translúcida do papel escolhido para o livro, que se estabelece um curto-circuito das matérias. Enquanto o referente diz respeito a algo maciço — montanhas, solos e costões — a textura e a transparência do suporte provocam uma sutileza ímpar. Nesse contraste, outros sentidos para a paisagem são estabelecidos: ela deixa de ser apenas interpretada como estática e inanimada. Segundo a artista, “o translúcido traz uma leveza à imagem da matéria e pode nos remeter a ver os morros e rochas para além dos seus sentidos naturalistas.” É também graças à diafaneidade das folhas que o leitor pode observar uma sobreposição dos registros — a cada vez que avança em sua leitura, novos contornos e fronteiras vão sendo criados através das páginas.
Ainda, a edição combina esse trabalho fotográfico com passagens dos livros Missing Words for Considering Stones, Rocks, Pebbles and Mountains: A Vocabulary of Proximity (2021), organizado pela artista e investigadora brasileira Mabe Bethônico (1966), e o livro Ser Crânio (2019) do filósofo francês Georges Didi-Huberman (1953). Ambos os títulos são importantes interlocutores na elaboração desse ensaio visual.
A Pele da Terra resulta dos trabalhos e experimentações desenvolvidos ao longo de doze meses no contexto do grupo de estudos em fotografia contemporânea sob coordenação do artista André Penteado (1970).
